Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Victoria Bannon

Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Victoria Bannon

August 8, 2024
A blue background with yellow headers around the text. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. The headings are in yellow and the regular text is in white. On the left is a photo of Victoria, smiling outside under a tree and in front of a lake. She has red hair and is wearing a blue and white floral dress. The text reads, “Have you always dreamed of being a writer?
‘Yes, I think it’s one of those things that either lives within you or it doesn’t. It’s not a dream that has to be planted or a vocation to be settled for.’
Any tips for incoming MFA students?
‘Everyone's on their own path, so don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Focus on your work!’
‘For writing inspiration and advice, I go to the internet and craft books. Other writers are more than willing to share tips and tricks they’ve found.’”
The same background and style as the first. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. On the top right is a photo of Victoria, standing in front of a large city/mountain landscape, looking ove her shoulder. She is wearing a white dress. On the bottom left is a selfie of Victoria, standing in front of stores outside, and wearing a green short-sleeve turtleneck and a silver fox necklace. The text reads, “What is your first step in crafting a story?
‘It depends. I’m not the John Irving type who can start with a last sentence. Sometimes the character comes first, sometimes a plot point. For the one I’m currently writing, I was at a baseball game and I had a ‘what if’ moment and then a scene came into my head. I didn’t have anything to write it down, so I just kept that scene in my head on the drive home, not wanting to lose it. It wound up being the pivotal scene of the novel I’m currently working on.’

Quick Facts:

Favorite pastimes are painting, learning Italian, and working on an album with her husband
