Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Julie Amento

One day I wasn’t writing, and the next I was, and it came so naturally that it felt like I had been writing stories my entire life.’ What is your favorite genre to read and write? ‘My favorite genre to read is Young Adult fiction—more specifically, fantasy, romance, supernatural, post-apocalyptic, and dystopian stories. My favorite short stories I’ve written have been speculative fiction, but the longer works that I love to write the most are YA dystopian and supernatural romances.’ (a quote with no question attached to it) “Don’t wait for the ‘right’ time to write. In my experience, it may never feel like the right time, and sometimes you just have to sit down and write even when you don’t feel like it. Once you create a habit out of it, it’ll be much easier to write. Don’t sit down with the goal to write a lot in one sitting. Set a short, manageable goal, and if you happen to go beyond that then you can be extra proud of yourself.”

It’s one of the reasons I started writing—to make an inspirational protagonist who made readers feel like they could be extraordinary too.
