Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Shannon Solley

Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Shannon Solley

August 2, 2024
A blue background with yellow headers around the text. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. The headings are in yellow and the regular text is in white. On the left is a photo of Shannon, smiling outside by an ocean or lake and mountains. She has long dark brown hair, glasses on her head, and is wearing a dark blue dress. The text reads, “Why did you choose to pursue writing?
‘Writing challenges me to be creative and learn how to develop and engage an audience. As a writer, I have the opportunity to research and explore varying topics of interest and weave that effort into pieces that have purpose.’
What do you love to write about the most?
‘For fiction, I find myself writing about mother-daughter relationships, independence, and the ocean. For non-fiction, I enjoy writing about science topics for a broad audience. In the future, I hope to find a publication I can contribute my scribblings to, as I am currently compiling a collection of articles for submission relating to ecology.’
‘Starting small with habits is more important than large pushes towards a creative endeavor.’
The same background and style as the first. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. On the top right is a photo of Shannon, looking back and smiling outside. She has glasses on her head, is wearing a tan jacket, and has a blue and orange bag. On the bottom left is a photo of Shannon, smiling outside under a sign in Italian, surrounded by leaves. She has glasses on her head, and is wearing a black-and-white checkered shacket with a blue dress underneath. The text reads, “Any tips for young writers?
‘As someone who has worked with writers of varying levels, the best advice I can give is to build solid creative habits. As you get older and the responsibilities of life come down on you, those habits will serve as the preverbal tin roof that protects your writing den from the inevitable, messy storms of life. Starting small with habits is more important than large pushes towards a creative endeavor. Effort over time adds up. For writers, I suggest picking either a time in the morning or evening to write and read for 10 minutes each.’
