Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Jasmine Rushing

Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Jasmine Rushing

July 31, 2024
A blue background with yellow headers around the text. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. The headings are in yellow and the regular text is in white. On the left is a selfie of Jasmine smiling with a white backdrop. She has long dark brown hair and is wearing a white shirt. The text reads, “What are some of your core values?
‘I’m very grounded in religion. I’m Christian. Forgiveness to me is a really big thing. There are a lot of awful people in the world. If you hold on to anger it can really destroy you. There were times I didn’t like certain people or a professor who wasn’t treating or grading me fairly. In the end, it is good to overcome that, to get through it the best way you can, and let it go because they also have their own issues to sort out.’
How would you describe your journey?
‘My journey is all a part of life. In undergrad, I was dead set on going to medical school and pursing a career in STEM. Though it is true I’d always have something concrete, I wasn’t passionate about it. So I ended up choosing for myself what made me happy.’
‘My mission is to use my background in science, psychological and neurological experience, and all the amazing people I met and travels I’ve experienced while working at Education First to influence my writing. I’ve started my own website, Short Story Gates.’’
The same background and style as the first. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. On the top right is a selfie of Jasmine smiling in a kitchen, wearing a black shirt, with red and black painted nails. On the bottom left is a selfie of Jasmine smiling in a library, wearing a light blue shirt and a dark blue bag. The text reads, “What is your favorite genre?
‘Initially, my first love was romance. That’s how I fell in love with writing. From there, it kind of branched out. In undergrad, I was studying biopsychology. Any story that had a creepy element where one of the characters had a neurological abnormality, or anything related to mental health, really grabbed me and pulled me in. I then got into fantasy. I started picking up different fantasy books and reading manga comics. As of right now, I’m getting into nonfiction. I’m really enjoying reading memoirs.’
