Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Sheryl Recinos

Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Sheryl Recinos

July 10, 2024
A blue background with yellow headers around the text. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. The headings are in yellow and the regular text is in white. A photo of Sheryl is on the left. She has red hair in a ponytail. She is wearing black headphones, glasses, and a black jacket and shirt. She is in a recording room. The text reads, “Why did you decide to pursue an MFA?
‘I started writing professionally in 2018 and self-published a memoir. After that, I decided to get something traditionally published, which is why I wanted to pursue an MFA degree. My goal is getting the opportunity to learn the other side of publishing. It’s giving me a chance to network and learn more about the process.’
Where does your inspiration come from?
‘The biggest reason I started writing and wrote my memoir is my brother passed away. It made me realize that I needed to write my story and make sure other people could have a chance to heal in places I couldn’t, until I was much older. My memoir is about my experiences as a homeless youth and growing up in a very traumatic household. I didn’t realize how important this story was to tell until I lost my brother.’

‘I’ve learned to speak my truths, so that the people who need to hear or read them can.’”
The same background and style as the first. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. A photo of Sheryl is in the top right. Her red hair is in a ponytail. She’s wearing a grey mask and a black shirt. She is holding an orange book (not able to read the name). She is next to a person with black hair tied up in a bun, who is wearing a black mask and a white coat over a black outfit. They are holding Sheryl’s book, Hindsight. In the bottom left is a photo of Sheryl, smiling with her hair down outside in front of a large building. She is wearing a blue shirt under a black jacket and standing next to a person with glasses, a blue hat, and a blue button-up over a white shirt. The text reads, “What should people know about you as a writer?
‘I write from my heart and with a goal of advocacy, to help young people and create books that I would have needed as a kid. That’s why I tend to write more towards young adults and middle grade. I’m also very focused. I have one big goal in life and I’m trying to figure out how to make it happen. I want to be a part of helping to end homelessness.’
