Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Julie Amento

Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Julie Amento

May 28, 2024
A blue background with yellow headers around the text. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. The headings are in yellow and the regular text is in white. A photo of Julie Amento is on the left. She is standing in front of a teal backdrop, wearing a dark button-up with a graphic t-shirt and black ripped jeans. She has glasses, and blonde and brunette hair. The text reads, “How did you discover your passion for writing?
‘I don’t know if I can pinpoint exactly when I discovered my passion for writing. One day I wasn’t writing, and the next I was, and it came so naturally that it felt like I had been writing stories my entire life.’
What is your favorite genre to read and write?
‘My favorite genre to read is Young Adult fiction—more specifically, fantasy, romance, supernatural, post-apocalyptic, and dystopian stories. My favorite short stories I’ve written have been speculative fiction, but the longer works that I love to write the most are YA dystopian and supernatural romances.’
(a quote with no question attached to it)
“Don’t wait for the ‘right’ time to write. In my experience, it may never feel like the right time, and sometimes you just have to sit down and write even when you don’t feel like it. Once you create a habit out of it, it’ll be much easier to write. Don’t sit down with the goal to write a lot in one sitting. Set a short, manageable goal, and if you happen to go beyond that then you can be extra proud of yourself.”
The same background and style as the first. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. A photo of Julie is in the top right. She is smiling in the woods, wearing a purple and orange jacket, gray pants, and a pink-red hat. In the bottom left is a selfie of Julie smiling with a black, orange, and white cat. She is wearing a black t-shirt. The text reads, “What would you say is your biggest inspiration?
‘I’ve read so many books with strong women protagonists in those formative years, and the more I read about these brave women the more I aspired to be like them. It’s one of the reasons I started writing—to make an inspirational protagonist who made readers feel like they could be extraordinary too. So my biggest inspiration in life is all of those YA protagonists that saw themselves as seemingly ordinary people who are then launched into an epic adventure that makes them realize they are extraordinary.’
