Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Daryl Ellerbe

Creative Writing MFA Student Spotlight: Daryl Ellerbe

May 10, 2024
A blue background with yellow headers around the text. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. The headings are in yellow and the regular text is in white. A photo of Daryl Ellerbe is on the left, she is smiling and holding a cup of tea. She has brunette hair and is wearing a tan sweater and red-green scarf. The text reads, “How has advising become a part of your writing career?
‘For about 10-15 years, I was a teacher of English as a second language, and I can’t tell you how much that’s inspired my writing. I just get really motivated by students in general, by someone who is young, who doesn’t know everything yet, but who has the courage to try hard and maybe fail, and then get up again.’
Favorite Setting for Writing?
‘It does help to change the location a lot, but my favorite place is lying down straight in bed, under the comforter, laptop in my lap, notebook on my side. That’s when I really find that zone.”
Who are your motivations for completing your MFA?
‘I have some friends who are writers and who are artistic (theater people, directors, editors, etc.) that I’ve really kept in contact with from college, specifically. Even though we all live in different cities across the world, we kind of have that deep bond. When we share with each other, when we bounce ideas off of each other, when we inspire each other, that’s just what keeps me going.’”
The same background and style as the first. The Drexel University logo is at the bottom. A photo of Daryl is on the right, she is smiling in a brown-red sweater. On the bottom left is another photo of Daryl and another person, smiling at each other and wearing matching blue, pink, and purple dresses. The text reads, “Any advice for up-and-coming writers?
‘Just tell your story. There’s no standard that you have to be held to, don’t compare yourself to others. The world needs everyone’s stories, so however you tell it is the way you tell it. That is very special and should be praised.’
